Can Software Live in the Cloud?

As it continues to evolve and grow the cloud has become much more than merely a secondary storage system. A host of operators are using the cloud for an ever increasing array of services, including everything from music sharing to managing printing services. As yet another development within the cloud some providers like OnLive Desktop, Nivio and CloudOn are delivering full blown office applications to mobile devices by running their programs on cloud servers. Some of the applications are actually free, for the moment.

Using Documents with Nivio

Using a mobile to work with Microsoft Office documents can be a frustrating experience. It is often the case that productivity suites like QuickOffice and Documents To Go will be found lacking. This is also the case with web based applications like Zoho Office and Google Docs where many of the features that you could access on a PC simply do not operate as you expect them to on a mobile device. There are a range of new services like Nivio that have adopted an innovative approach in order to enable users to use mobile devices for so-called ‘real-work’. These services use remote servers to run Microsoft Office, or other similar productivity programs, and deliver traditional interfaces optimized for mobile capacity.

What do Nivio OnLive Desktop and CoundOn Have in Common?

One feature which is to be found on all three of these cloud bases services is the popular Office Trifecta for documents; PowerPoint, Excel and Word. They have several advantages in terms of the way software can be utilized and in how storage is handled. They overcome any operating system problems as the software can be accessed from all of the major operating systems including iOS5 and Android. This means you can use whichever device you are working on whether it be a smart phone or iPad and access your software on the run. As you would expect each of the services offer web based storage so that files can be accessed remotely. For OnLive Desktop and Nivio the storage is built in to their service whereas with CloudOn this feature is integrated through cloud services like Dropbox and Box.com.

Differences in the Services

There are some fairly significant differences in how these services operate. In the case of CloudOn applications are accessed in a minimalist interface created just for this service. Through OnLive Desktop and Nivio users are able to access full scale version of the Windows virtual desktop. This includes a reasonably high end version of Internet Explorer, which supports Flash technology. Of the three systems CloudOn has the most user-friendly interface. The most recent release for the service has included an add on for image-file viewing and Adobe Reader.

Although they are slightly clunkier to use the other services do have a bit more to offer. OnLive Desktop has included the Windows accessories of Paint and Calculator. It has also included a Microsoft Surface Collage; an app, optimized for touchscreens, which turns the desktop into a multifunctional digital photo frame.

All three of these services are only in their infancy and have seen several improvements even during the time that this article was being researched and developed. At the time of writing the Nivio service is a beta version which can be accessed by invitation only. It is possible to get on to the waiting list via the Nivio website. Through this there is a menu of applications for which you can subscribe monthly.

If you are looking for information on how to help an alcoholic you are more likely to find it than you would if you were looking for help on how to use these services. The information is Spartan and is undergoing almost constant changes and upgrades.

Device compatibility

As with most of the other features of these services the device compatibility varies widely and there are imminent planned changes. CloudOn currently runs just for iOS5 but it is expecting to add Android within the next 4 to 6 weeks. OnLive Desktop can be used on iPads and Android 2.3 tablets. Nivio is compatible with any HTML5 browser, in addition it has apps to support Windows, OS X, Android 2.1 (or later) and iOS.

It is inevitable that the services will change and offer a greater degree of flexibility. What is even more certain is that they way they operate is being watched very carefully by software manufacturers as a view towards offering this service into the future.

Described most simply, blinkx is an Internet search engine designed to find specific video and audio media anywhere on the web. However, unlike, say, a video search on Google that displays results based solely on the titles of the videos, blinkx uses various pieces of analytical software to accurately pinpoint the precise content of the searched videos.

The Internet now plays an increasingly prominent role in everyday life, with people now regularly transferring money online; shopping online; running businesses online; or even searching for the love of their life online. It’s likely that televisions will one day become obsolete, to be replaced by online video content and direct live streaming. When that day occurs, those who already play a part in providing online media services are going to find themselves in a potent position. One of these people is Suranga Chandratillake.

History

Chandratillake first developed blinkx in 2004 as an Internet browser toolbar before launching the company in early 2005. By late 2006, the technology had been utilized in Lycos, AOL, RealPlayer, InfoSpace and various Microsoft services such as Live.com and MSN.

In May 2007 the company had become successful enough to be taken public on the London Stock Exchange, further increasing both profitability and prominence. In August 2009, blinkx had entered the top 10 video sites with the highest number of monthly streams, ranking beneath sites like YouTube, Hulu and Yahoo.

Today

Thanks to research & development investments of $150 million, constant refinement of the search engine over the twelve years of its current lifespan has seen blinkx grow from a university startup to multi-million-dollar company existing at the forefront of Internet video technology.

Blinkx is now estimated to index 35 million hours of video content from all over the web. Put another way, that’s a little less than four thousand years. Every day, the site processes over seven million searches, trawling through video sites, podcasts, vlogs and stray uploads in a matter of seconds and returning results almost guaranteed to be what you’re looking for.

Self-styled as the “Remote Control for the Video Web,” blinkx operates in partnership with over 720 media providers and distributors, making it the single largest index of media in existence. As the paradigm shift of mass media grants greater significance to online content, the services blinkx provides will likely become the standard launch pad for anyone searching for Internet TV.

The Technology

As the Internet was originally comprised solely of written content, the earliest search engines were developed with only the capability to search text in mind. Most search engines nowadays simply use re-purposed iterations of this keyword-based technology, but blinkx is something much more cutting-edge.

As well as the simple identification and categorization of video titles, blinkx also incorporates video analysis and speech recognition software to analyze and identify the relevancy of the located videos. It then compares the phonetic audio and any textual content (such as written descriptions or closed captions) with the desired search terms to ascertain the most relevant results.

New Developments

On 26th January 2012, the US Patent and Trademark Office awarded a patent to blinkx for its “moving thumbnail” technology. When searching with the video engine, the top results can be displayed in a 5×5 “video wall” where each result is displayed like a small TV screen. The technology allows the images of the first few seconds of the video to be displayed as a repeating series of thumbnails, cycled fast enough to create the illusion of a moving picture, creating the information age’s equivalent of a flipbook.

The technology was developed in partnership with a team at Cambridge University, with whom the company maintains a close tie through local headquarters. This direct connection to the next generation of innovators who are more often than not heavily involved in the development of new technology will allow blinkx to stay several steps ahead of their rivals and maintain their position as the premiere resource for video content on the entire Internet.

For almost two and half decades, this character of the Indian Cinema has given its self introduction over a thousand times on Indian screens. So much so that Masterji’s death has been avenged twice by actors from two generations.

Although , if same was to happen to someone with Gandhian principles, Kancha would have lived happily ever after.Gandhi said, “An eye for an eye will make the entire world blind”. But that was a century ago. This place has changed.

Kancha screwed Vijay real bad. Magnitudes which are beyond any writing. So lets keep that in the movies. However, our lives, both personal and professional, are full of losers who like to mess around , just for kicks. You should always Get Even.

With all due respect to the great man Gandhi , if you are someone who believes in getting even , then there are few things which you might want to learn from Vijay Dinanath Chauhan.

1.) Get Even for the Right reasons

Well, Vijay had a valid reason. We know why the young man got “angry”.Lets look at Steve Jobs.

Jobs had to take revenge for trailing second place behind PC’s in the 1980′s. He was convinced that his OS with a graphical user interface will catch the mainstream users as compared to the geeky and boxy mainframe and minicomputer like PC.But eventually, PC did take off and became the standard for personal computing. He was then kicked out of Apple in 1984.

2.) Wait for the Right Time and Prepare

Vijay waited for 20 years. He had to grow up, eat well and workout. Taking on Kancha with 12 biceps would have been impossible.

Jobs was working on a computer that would beat the original Mac and the PC. His computer NeXT did not exactly do that , but the NeXT OS code eventually became the core of the new Mac OS and is central to iOS today as well.

3.) Put yourself in a position of Superior Power

Vijay dethroned Rauf Lala to take over the Mumbai drug market and gained leverage on Kancha.

After returning to Apple, Jobs enhanced Mac OS in ways that made it the richest PC OS in the market. His MacBook Air redefined how a portable computer should look like.

4.) Strike back – Publicly

Vijay did to Kancha the same thing that Kancha did to his father. The entire Mandwa village saw the good win.

As for Jobs, Mac outpaced other PCs and showed a great rise in shipments for the years to follow. Jobs’s products came up to be known for their user experience. He then later redefined Music, Phones and Tablets, making a complete different space for himself and his products in the market.

PS 1: Whatever you do, don’t shoot a police officer in the chest.

PS 2 : Steve Jobs also vowed revenge on Eric Schmidt because he thought that Android was a complete rip-off of iPhone OS. For a period of time, Schmidt was on the board of Apple and serving as the CEO of Google, the company which later created Android. Jobs wanted to destroy Android but unfortunately he ran out of time. Lets wait and see what he left behind in the iPhone to do that.
